The B-side: a closer look at National B road racing
The Scottish national road racing season begins this Saturday (19 March) with the 120 kilometre Gifford Road Race, one of four National B road races this weekend. Organised by the Edinburgh Road Club, the race forms round 1 of the men’s 2022 Alba Road Race Series, a five-round road race series supported by Scottish Cycling.
The route
The riders will take on nine laps of the Gifford circuit in East Lothian.
Contenders and startlist
65 riders are on the provisional startlist, including seven from a strong Ribble Weldtite Pro Cycling team, who boast Scottish pair Finn Crockett (who finished second in 2020) and Stuart Balfour, as well as former WorldTour man Harry Tanfield*. The team’s Zeb Kyffin won the last edition of the race in 2020.
Scottish National Road Race champion David Duggan rides, while 2019 Alba Series winner Cameron Richardson (RT23) will be looking to start the defence of his series title with a strong ride.
Our former journal contributor James Jobber, now riding for UCI Continental team Kuwait Pro Cycling, already has a week-long stage race under his belt in the Saudi Tour, and will want to better his fifth-place finish in the event two years ago. Matti Dobbins (RT23) caught our eye in 2021 and is another rider to watch, as is Saint Piran’s Michael Gill.
*Both riders have withdrawn from the race due to illness.
