Rayner Foundation dinner returns to Leeds in November
The charity behind 723 grants for young British riders racing abroad will hold its fundraising dinner at the Queens Hotel on 7 November. Ticket sales close on 21 October.
The Rayner Foundation will hold its annual charity dinner at the Queens Hotel in Leeds on Saturday 7 November. The money raised goes straight back into the grants that help young British riders race abroad.
The evening starts at 6pm, with dinner, entertainment and an auction of cycling memorabilia and experiences. The Foundation says the night is modelled on the old club dinners that some of its older guests will remember, a chance for the generations of British racing to get together. Many of this year’s supported riders are expected to attend. Most of them spend the season racing in France, Belgium, Spain and Italy, so it’s a rare chance to see them in the UK.
The Foundation began in 1995 as the Dave Rayner Fund, named after the Yorkshire rider who died in 1994, and became a registered charity in 2019. Its records list 723 grants since the first intake in 1996, spread across more than 400 riders. That first intake of four included David Millar and Charly Wegelius. Later names on the list include Dan Martin, Adam Yates, Tao Geoghegan Hart, Dani King and Owain Doull, whose careers between them include Monument wins, a Grand Tour title and Olympic gold. Many former recipients now work in the sport behind the scenes.
This year the Foundation funded 29 riders, among them Mattie Dodd at the INEOS Grenadiers academy team and Jed Smithson at Hagens Berman Jayco. It also backed 10 junior teams racing abroad through its Gateway Project.
Tickets cost £75 each. Tables of 10 cost from £700, and sponsor tables go up to £1,500. All proceeds go to the Foundation’s work, and details are on the Rayner Foundation website. Ticket sales close on 21 October. Anyone who can’t attend can donate through JustGiving.
