Report

Sunshine and blue skies greeted the riders as they lined up for 10 and three-quarter laps of the Danum Trophy circuit near Doncaster.

Adam Kenway (Derby CC Webuycycle Huub RT) attacked from the gun but was caught early on as the race began to fragment during the opening laps.

Joe Wilson, Damien Clayton (both Embark Spirit BSS) and James McKay (Cycling Sheffield) were all active as the race unfolded, each involved in starting and covering the moves.

In the second half of the race a group of five forged clear involving Wilson, Kenway, James Hartley (Cycling Sheffield), Connor McKinnon (Dolan Ellessee), and a junior rider [not identified]. Behind, McKay and Clayton were in a chase group of six.

The two groups came together and, on the bell lap, McKay escaped with Clayton and Matt Warhurst (ROKiT-SRCT). But on the final ascent of Cadeby Col, halfway around the course, the trio was usurped by Toby Barnes (Private Member) and Jenson Young (ROKiT-SRCT).

Behind Barnes and Young, junior rider Seb Grindley (RTD – J’s CycleShack) and new Cross Team Legendre signing Jim Brown also leapfrogged McKay et al. as the pair set off in pursuit of the leaders.

Barnes and Young stayed clear, however, with Barnes outgunning Young in the sprint for the line. It was Barnes’ second win in a row at the race, having won last year’s edition. His victory also awarded him the honour of being the race’s 50th winner. It was an important win for Barnes, who is yet to agree a deal with a new team after his old team AT85 Pro Cycling suddenly collapsed. We understand he has had some positive talks, however, meaning a new team could be revealed soon.

Grindley mopped up the final podium place, with Brown in fourth. Sweden Cycling Academy’s Nick Cooper led in what remained of the bunch for 5th place, just ahead of Junior CiCLE Classic winner Ben Marsh (BCC Race Team).
