Danum Trophy: mini-preview and startlist

Startlist, history, route, and timings for the Danum Trophy, 2 April 2023

The long-running Danum Trophy will crown its 50th winner this weekend as one of three National B events taking place. The RCR Fatcreations Road Races begin proceedings on Saturday 1 April, while the Danum Trophy Road Race takes place on Sunday 2 April, just before the Betty Pharoah Memorial on Sunday 2 April.

What is it?

Organised by Doncaster Wheelers CC, the Danum Trophy is a long-running race set just west of Doncaster, South Yorkshire.

First run in 1969, past winners include a number of illustrious names, including Chris Walker (1986), Russell Downing (1997), Graham Briggs (2003 and 2015), Tom Pidcock (2017, Matt Holmes (2018). In fact, 39-year-old Briggs on is on the startlist this year too. Last year’s winner was Toby Barnes. Barnes, too, lines up at the race, no doubt keen to add to his Peaks 2 Day stage win as he hunts for a new team following the sudden collapse of AT85 Pro Cycling.

Whoever wins this weekend will be the race’s 50th victor.

Route

The race features a 9.5 km circuit with 125 m of elevation per lap. With 10 and three-quarter laps in all, as well as a short rollout onto the circuit from the race HQ in Mexborough, the total race distance is 103 km.

The steepest part of the course arrives after the Denaby Ings Nature Reserve, as the road climbs up to Cadeby. The climb isn’t severe overall but does include an 11% rise about 1 km in, which is sure to test the legs at the 11th time of asking.

The finish line is positioned in High Melton at the end of gently rising drag.

Provisional startlist

The startlist includes a strong field. Defending champion Toby Barnes (Private Member) will be one to watch. Cycling Sheffield has a full team including the on-form James MacKay. Peaks 2 Day stage winner Damien Clayton heads a strong Embark Spirit BSS team. Graham Briggs (Clancy Briggs Cycling Academy) has the opportunity to make it a third race win over an incredible 20-year stretch, if were to win.

UCI Continental rider Joe Pidcock (TRINITY Racing) could emulate his brother Tom’s 2017 victory. Jenson Young and Matt Warhurst (both ROKiT-SRCT) were second and third respectively at the Peaks 2 Day so are clearly in good shape. The race also includes the top three from the Junior CiCLE Classic last weekend: race winner Ben Marsh (BCC Race Team), second-placed Jacob Bush and third-placed Seb Grindley (both MAS Design – Fensham Howes).
