Men’s national road race rankings

Two National B road races took place last weekend: the Straiton Struggle in Ayrshire and the DAP CC Spring Road Race. With most of the top domestic riders in action at the Rutland-Melton International CiCLE Classic (which, as a UCI race, doesn’t count toward the rankings), this was an opportunity for some of the country’s lesser celebrated riders to steal a march.

The biggest beneficiary was London Dynamo’s Rowan Baker. The 21-year-old has been one of the revelations of the domestic scene this year, so it was no surprise to us when he took his first National B road race win at the DAP CC Spring Road Race on Sunday. The win moved the 21-year-old up to second in the rankings, just one point behind long-term leader Ollie Peckover (trainSharp Elite). Baker’s win also means he is now the highest-ranked under-23 rider, leapfrogging previous under-23 leader Jenson Young (ROKiT-SRCT).

Meanwhile, Ride Revolutions’s Clay Davies’ second place at the DAP CC Spring Road Race, his second podium in a row, propelled him into the top ten for the first time.

There were only minor changes to the team rankings. The top 5 remains unchanged but Wheelbase CabTech Castelli moves from 9th to 6th, while London Dynamo moves up one place to 9th.

This weekend there are two men’s National B road races for men, the PNE National B road race, and the Oakenclough road race, which forms round 2 of the Proper Northern Road Race Series. Both races take place on Sunday 30 April.

Women’s national road race rankings

After a hiatus since the RCR FatCreations road race, women’s National B road racing returned last weekend with the Dave Peck Memorial British Cup Race, round 1 of the British Women’s Team Cup.

Ruth Shier, Lydia Watts and Emily Proud are all new entrants into the top 20 thanks to their fine respective performances at the Dave Peck Memorial.

Shier (Hutchinson-Brother UK) won the race, bagging 60 points, which means she rockets up to 7th place overall. Her teammate Watts was 2nd, gaining enough points to move into 14th in the rankings table. While Proud (Le Col RT) sneaks just inside the top 20 thanks to her 3rd place on Sunday.

Hutchinson-Brother UK’s excellent performance at the Dave Peck Memorial moves the team to the top of the team rankings, from 3rd. The team now has a 27 point lead over Pro-Noctis – Heidi Kjeldsen – 200 Degrees Coffee. DAS-Handsling sits 3rd.

Women’s National B road racing continues this weekend with the Oakenclough road race, round 2 of Cold Dark North’s Proper Northern Road Race Series.

How it works

The rankings take results from National A and National B road races in the UK in 2023. Note the emphasis on road racing; results from circuit races and criteriums don’t count. And neither do points from Regional or UCI road races. The focus is deliberately narrow; we want to understand who has been performing in national-level road races in the UK across the season. And keeping it focused makes it easier for us to manage and update here at British Conti HQ.

Like any rankings system, this isn’t perfect. We aren’t pretending it will be a completely objective measure of road racing performance or ability. But we do hope it injects a bit of fun and helps create a bit of interest in national-level road racing this season, particularly at National B level.

The scoring system is very similar to the one used by British Cycling, with riders in the top 20 of races qualifying for points, with points also being awarded to stage winners.
