Men’s national road race rankings

Following a hiatus last weekend in the men’s National B road calendar, this weekend saw three brilliant races to get things moving again in the national road race rankings.

First up was the RCR Fatcreations Road Race on Saturday, followed by the Danum Trophy and Betty Pharoah Legstretchers Memorial on Sunday.

Ollie Peckover (trainSharp Elite) continued his incredible start to the season with a win at the RCR Fatcreations Road Race – his third win from three races. This meant he extended his lead over second place to 57 points.

Jenson Young (ROKiT-SRCT), now our highest-placed U23 rider, leaped from th place into 2nd after his 2nd place at the Danum Trophy. His previously occupied 5th spot is now inhabited by Danum Trophy winner Toby Barnes.

Jack Crook (Richardsons Trek DAS) rose one spot, into third place, with only one point separating him and Zeb Kyffin (Saint Piran) who now sits in fourth place after his 2nd place at the RCR Fatcreations Road Race.

Next up on the men’s road race calendar is the Timmy James Memorial at Witham on the Hill this Sunday (9 April).

Women’s national road race rankings

Zoe Langham (Pro-Noctis – Heidi Kjeldsen – 200 Degrees Coffee) is our new leader in the women’s national road race rankings after her 2nd place at the RCR Fatcreations Road Race on Saturday.

Both Langham, and RCR Fatcreations Road Race winner Jessica Finney (AWOL – O’Shead) climb two spots, pushing previous leader Tamsin Miller (Hutchinson-Brother UK) and Monica Greenwood (DAS – Handsling Bikes) down the rankings into 3rd and 4th place respectively.

Bexy Dew (Pro-Noctis – Heidi Kjeldsen – 200 Degrees Coffee) retains 5th spot, just a single point behind Greenwood, and will have her eyes set on Greenwood and Miller, are in front by just single digits.

Flora Perkins (Fenix-Deceuninck Development Team), who was not in action in the UK this weekend, remains our highest-ranked U23 rider.

A number of junior and U23 domestic riders will participate in the Witham Hall Grand Prix race this weekend, part of the of Junior & U23 Women’s National Road Series. However, as the race isn’t open to all domestic riders, the results won’t count toward our national road race rankings.

This next full Nat B road race for women is not until 23 April when the opening round of the British Team Cup, the Twickenham CC Dave Peck Memorial British Cup Race, takes place.

How it works

The rankings take results from National A and National B road races in the UK in 2023. Note the emphasis on road racing; results from circuit races and criteriums don’t count. And neither do points from Regional or UCI road races. The focus is deliberately narrow; we want to understand who has been performing in national-level road races in the UK across the season. And keeping it focused makes it easier for us to manage and update here at British Conti HQ.

Like any rankings system, this isn’t perfect. We aren’t pretending it will be a completely objective measure of road racing performance or ability. But we do hope it injects a bit of fun and helps create a bit of interest in national-level road racing this season, particularly at National B level.

The scoring system is very similar to the one used by British Cycling, with riders in the top 20 of races qualifying for points, with points also being awarded to stage winners.
