Circuit
The circuit is a spectator-friendly course based around Barnsley’s Church Street, which is lined with pubs and restaurants.
It is a fast circuit with technical sections in the back half of the course, taking in Eastgate, Regent Street, Mandela Gardens, Back Regents Street, Eldon Street, Market Hill and the start/finish straight on Church Street.
A mixture of street surfaces provides the riders with an additional challenge, promising aggressive and frenetic racing.
Contenders
This isn’t an extensive preview, but names to watch in the women’s race include recent national circuit race winner Josie Nelson (Team Coop-Hitec Products), two-time Tour Series round winner Sammie Stuart (CAMS-Basso), Emma Jeffers (JRC-INTERFLON Race Team) – a breakthrough junior rider this year – former national circuit race champion Jo Tindley (Pro-Noctis – Rotor – Redchilli Bikes by Heidi Kjeldsen), Lee Boon (Torelli-Cayman-Islands-Scimitar) and Spectra Wiggle p/b Vitus’ pairing of Charlie Berry and Amira Mellor. Mellor is the top-placed rider in the National Circuit Series standings to take to the start line.
In the men’s race, WiV SunGod has dominated the series so far and has options in Toby Barnes, Jim Brown and Jake Scott. Scott and Brown are second and third respectively in the National Circuit Series standings, with current leader Sam Watson absent. Finn Crockett and Harry Tanfield form part of a reduced squad for Ribble Weldtite Pro Cycling, Tom Mazzone and Cooper Sayers could go well for Saint Piran, Spectra Wiggle p/b Vitus’ Isaac Mundy is also dangerous in a crit, while Team Inspired’s Bob Donaldson is another rider that can’t be ruled out. Watch out too for the always-entertaining Alec Briggs (Tekkerz CC).
Timings
The women’s race starts at 19.30 and will last around 50 minutes, while the men’s race begins at 20.30 and runs for a similar length.
