The B-side: a closer look at National B road racing
Junior rider Flora Perkins (VC Londres) took what must be the biggest win of her young career so far on Sunday at the Banbury Star Women’s Road Race. Perkins’ victory came after beating Danielle Shrosbree (Team Brother UK – LDN) in a two-up sprint after a tough, selective day of racing.
The second National B road race – and the first ‘in real life’ round of the 2021 British Women’s Team Cup – began with an early crash, which forced a number of retirements. Thankfully, there were no serious injuries. This led to a leading group of 21 riders being formed, still together as the race headed into the final lap of the three.
The final ascent of Edgehill gradually split the leading group and then on the final short climb to the finish, Perkins and Shrosbree opened up a gap that they would keep to the line. Ten seconds further back was Nicole Coates (Torelli-Assure-Cayman Islands-Scimitar) in third, with our journal contributor Charliiy Berry (Pro-Noctis – Redchilli Bikes – Heidi Kjeldsen) a further 15 seconds back, the first of a bunch of 9 riders.
Jasmine Jones (Bianchi Dama) and Frankie Hall (Loughborough Lightning – TRG) underlined their good form by finishing in the top ten of a National B road race for the second weekend in a row, following their strong results at the Halesowen A&CC road race.
