2024 Rás na mBan stages 5 & 6: report and results

Noor Decker (JEGG DJR Academy) were the winners on stages 5 and 6 of the 2024 Rás na mBan, Sunday 8 September, as DAS-Hutchinson-Brother UK's Mia Griffin secured the overall title

Local favourite Mia Griffin (DAS-Hutchinson-Brother UK) etched her name into Irish cycling history today, becoming the first Irish rider to claim overall victory at the Rás na mBan since Olivia Dillon in 2013.

Griffin’s win came after a split stage on the final day of the race. Noor Dekker delivered a sensational performance to win the fifth stage time trial in Kilkenny, before Griffin’s teammate Lucy Lee won the final stage criterium.

Stage 5

Noor Dekker delivered a sensational performance to win the fifth stage of Rás na mBan in Kilkenny this morning, taking victory with a blistering time of 3 minutes and 27 seconds. The 26-year-old Dutch rider tackled the 2.5 km circuit around Kilkenny Castle at an average speed of 43.4 km/h, securing a much-needed win for her JEGG-DJR Academy team.

Dekker edged out fellow Dutchwoman and defending champion Manon de Boer (NWVG-Uplus) by just one second, making it a one-two for the Netherlands on the stage. Magenta jersey holder and race leader Mia Griffin (DAS-Hutchinson-Brother UK) finished third, a further second back, consolidating her position at the top of the general classification.

Griffin’s consistent performance meant she held an 11-second lead over De Boer heading into the final stage of the race. Dekker’s stage win moved her up to third overall, 23 seconds behind Griffin. With only the afternoon criterium left, Griffin remained in control of the general classification, but De Boer still had a chance to challenge with 13 seconds of time bonuses available in the final stage.

Stage 6

Stage 6, a hectic 2.1 km circuit race, was fiercely contested, with attacks and counter-attacks shaping the hour-long spectacle. The large local crowd watched as Team Ireland riders led aggressive moves, with Áine Doherty, Aliyah Rafferty, and Lucy Benezet-Minns all featuring in attempts to break away. Benezet-Minns stayed away solo for several laps, scooping valuable bonus seconds at the Intermediate Sprint. However, the decisive move came with two laps remaining, when Lucy Lee (DAS-Hutchinson-Brother UK), Stage 5 time trial winner Noor Dekker (JEGG-DJR Academy), and Canadian Anabelle Thomas (Primeau Vélo Groupe Abadie) broke clear.

The trio worked smoothly together to carve out an 11-second lead on the peloton, setting up a sprint for the podium places. Lee, who had worn the IVCA Wicklow 200 Queen of the Mountains jersey earlier in the week, proved the fastest, powering past Dekker to secure victory. Thomas followed in third.

Dekker’s strong performance also secured her second place overall in the general classification, just six seconds behind Griffin, after more than 11 hours of racing. Dutch defending champion Manon de Boer finished third overall, 11 seconds adrift.

Despite her repeated attempts to fracture the peloton in the closing laps, de Boer was unable to shake Griffin, who stayed safely in the bunch to celebrate her overall triumph. The final day’s victory capped a sensational week for Griffin, who also claimed the Cycling Ireland Points Classification, the Kilkenny County Council Best Irish Rider jersey, and two stage wins.

Elsewhere, Caoimhe O’Brien of DAS-Hutchinson-Brother UK secured the Sport Ireland Best Young Rider classification, wearing the white jersey from start to finish. Her team’s depth was further rewarded with the Best Team prize, while UCD Cycling Club took home the Paddy Doran Best Irish Team award.
