The 2024 Under-23 Open National Road Series began with the Stars of the South West road race on a 43.1km course starting and finishing in Tiverton, Devon.
It only took a few kilometres from the flag dropping for a break to form, with Dylan Hicks (Saint Piran), last season’s race winner David Hird (Cycling Sheffield) and Luke Brennan (HUUB BCC Race Team) the trio making the move.
The three riders combined well and as they completed the first lap of three their lead was already at two minutes. A lap later, however, the gap was down to just 38 seconds, setting up a tense final loop.

Hicks’ teammate Rowan Baker, winner of last weekend’s RCR FatCreations Road Race, took off from the peloton and bridged across to the leading trio in no time. Baker’s presence bolstered the breaks’ firepower and helped solidify their lead.
Baker and Hicks attacked on the final major climb of the day, creating a gap. Hird just about stayed in contact, but Brennan was dropped decisively. As they approached the line, Hicks sprinted to take the flag first, with Baker second and Hird coming in just a few seconds later.

Brennan held of the peloton to take fourth, while Maxwell Hereward (360cycling) won the sprint for fifth behind.
The win was Hicks’ first road race victory since joining Saint Piran. He rides the East Cleveland Classic next weekend and plans to defend his Under-23 Series at the PB Performance Espoirs Road Race on 21 April.
