Men’s national road race rankings

With James McKay (Cycling Sheffield) lining up in two of the weekend’s three races, the big question was could he score enough points to knock Alex Richardson (Saint Piran) off the top perch? Needing to close a 67 point gap, McKay was 11th at the Blaydon CC road race and 8th at the GA Bennett. A solid weekend but only enough to score 38 points, leaving him to remain second, 29 points shy of Richardson.

Jenson Young (ROKiT-SRCT) did not race but remains in third, the top under-23 rider, after his nearest rival, 4th-placed Rowan Baker pulled out midway through the Olveston GP suffering with a virus.

Another under-23, Dexter Leeming-Sykes (World Top The Edge) moves up two places to 5th thanks to a 4th place at the Blaydon CC road race, while Marinus Petersen charges into the top ten, climbing eleven places thanks to his win at the Olveston GP.

Ben Pease (Moonglu RT) is a new entrant in the top 20, up as high as 11th, after 10th at Blaydon and then second at the GA Bennett. And GA Bennett winner Adam Lewis (Saint Piran) sneaks into 20th place.

In the team rankings, Saint Piran continues its voluminous lead over ROKiT-SRCT. to enjoy a large advantage over nearest rivals ROKiT-SRCT. The top four is unchanged but Kalas Motip RT jump two places to 7th after Petersen’s Olveston GP win. Moonglu RT are into the top ten for the first time after a strong team showing.

This weekend there is just one men’s National B road race, the Drummond Trophy in Scotland, starring Finn Crockett (The Cycling Academy), among others.

Women’s national road race rankings

There was no national road racing last weekend for women, alas, meaning no changes to the rankings. Zoe Langham still leads the individual rankings, Hutchinson-Brother UK are ahead in the team rankings.

The rankings should get a shake up this weekend, however, with the Owen Blower Memorial road race. Four of the top ten, including Langham, are on the provisional startlist.

How it works

The rankings take results from National A and National B road races in the UK in 2023. Note the emphasis on road racing; results from circuit races and criteriums don’t count. And neither do points from Regional or UCI road races. The focus is deliberately narrow; we want to understand who has been performing in national-level road races in the UK across the season. And keeping it focused makes it easier for us to manage and update here at British Conti HQ.

Like any rankings system, this isn’t perfect. We aren’t pretending it will be a completely objective measure of road racing performance or ability. But we do hope it injects a bit of fun and helps create a bit of interest in national-level road racing this season, particularly at National B level.

The scoring system is very similar to the one used by British Cycling, with riders in the top 20 of races qualifying for points, with points also being awarded to stage winners.
