The peloton was bathed in glorious spring sunshine as it rolled it from Owlesbury, Hampshire for 10 and a half laps of a challenging circuit.
Last year’s race winner Richardson seemed set on defending his crown from the off, getting into an early break with Ollie Hurdle (StolenGoat RT) and Jordan Giles (Primera-TeamJobs).
The trio was later caught by a countermove featuring Seb Garry and Marinus Peterson (both Kalas Motip RT), and Oscar Hutchings (Team Tor Kalas 2000). This remained the status quo for a number of laps but as the lap counter ticked down, the race began to change once again.
First, Richardson decided to jettison the rest of the break, managing to shrug off everyone bar Hurdle. Meanwhile behind, a group of 8 riders counterattacked from the bunch, including Ollie Hucks (Kalas Motip), Sam Clark (trainSharp Elite) and Angus Hawkins (Ride Revolution Coaching), Jack Crook (Richardsons Trek DAS and new Cycling Academy signing Euan Woodliffe, among others.
The group of 8 caught the 4 riders dropped by Richardson and Hurdle. And then with a lap and half to go, Richardson surged clear of Hurdle. Richardson remained ahead to take another trademark solo win.
Behind, Hurdle was swallowed up – and then dropped – by the chasers, leaving a small group to fight it out for the remaining podium places. Sam Clark (trainSharp Elite) took second, with Angus Hawkins (Ride Revolution Coaching) in third.
