We were cruelly reminded of the dangers of racing on open roads in the UK on Sunday, when the 63rd edition of the Wally Gimber Trophy was curtailed due to serious injury to a rider following a collision with a car.
A statement from the organisers said:
The 63rd running of the Wally Gimber Trophy had to be stopped at the end of lap 2 after a traffic incident.
The race got underway in mild dry conditions with a damp but drying road surface.
The first lap saw a flurry of attacks until a small trio of three featuring Harold Evans (Le Col) Dom Jackson (Foran CCC) and Oliver Hucks (Kalas Motip RT) established a decent gap of almost a minute.
The peloton were working hard to bring the break back but as they entered Wadhurst one rider hit the back of a stationary car and received a serious injury that ultimately required an air ambulance.
After neutralising the race the decision was quickly taken not to restart bringing proceedings to a close.

The Ride Revolution team later revealed that the rider involved had been one theirs, explaining that the rider was in hospital awaiting surgery.
