What is it?
A new National A circuit race in the centre of Newark. If forms the final of the 2022 National Circuit Series (round 5 for the men, round 4 for the women).
Circuit
The circuit’s epicentre is Newark’s Royal Market Square, which will be home to food stalls, music and race commentary; a good spot to hang out if you are watching the racing live.
The course takes on a number of streets around the town, including Kirkgate, Middlegate, Stodman Street, Castlegate, Lombard Street, Cartergate, Bridge Street and the Market Square, where a finish gantry will be erected.
Cobbles feature on what is a twisty, technical and fast circuit. This looks like an ideal course of small breaks or solo moves to go clear.
Contenders
The field for both races is small (under 45 riders at the time of writing), with teams and riders committed elsewhere at UCI races and the Commonwealth Games. But the racing shouldn’t be any less frenetic as a result.
In the women’s race, we are set for a fascinating finale to decide the individual winner of the National Circuit Series. Barnsley Town Centre Races winner Emma Jeffers (JRC-Interflon) starts with a one-point lead over former national circuit race champion Jo Tindley (Pro-Noctis – Rotor – Redchilli Bikes presented by Heidi Kjeldsen). Jeffers has a killer sprint, despite being on junior gears, but will up against the enormously-experienced Tindley, who has the backing of a strong team. Current national circuit race champion Josie Nelson (Team Coop-Hitec Products) is another prime contender. Lee Boon (Torelli-Cayman-Islands-Scimitar) has placed well in recent circuit series without ever quite getting the win. And it will be interesting to see how Alex Morrice (Team LDN – Brother UK) fares in her first National Circuit Series race after her impressive National Road Series debut (second at the Lancaster GP).

In the men’s race, it’s a question of whether anyone can challenge the all-conquering WiV SunGod team. Their squad includes the first three riders in the National Circuit Series standings: leader Jake Scott, Fort Vale Colne GP winner Rob Scott and Jim Brown. In a depleted field, Saint Piran and Richardsons-Trek may be the nearest challengers (think Tom Mazzone or Conor McGoldrick). Callum Thornley (Wheelbase CabTech Castelli) was fourth at the Fort Vale Colne GP and seems to be getting better race, while Alex Briggs (Tekkerz CC) is due a good National Circuit Series result.
Timings
The women’s race starts at 19.30 and will last around 50 minutes, while the men’s race begins at 20.30 and runs for a similar length.
