Inside the Tour of Britain: Ethan Vernon’s race diary #7

After the highs of yesterday's sprint stage success, Ethan experiences disappointment in the ITT

Ethan Vernon (Great Britain) and Rory Townsend (Canyon dhb p/b Bloor Homes) are keeping race diaries for The British Continental throughout the Tour of Britain. This is Ethan’s diary entry after stage 6

I am pretty disappointed, I’m not going to lie

Stage 6 wrap

A 14.4 km time trial starting and finishing in the market town of Pershore. A ‘good tester‘ of Ethan Vernon’s form ahead of the Yorkshire world championships. And an important day for the GC hopefuls too.

Neopro Edoardo Affini (Mitchelton-Scott) took a surprise win, the 23-year-old’s second win in his first pro season. Behind, Van der Poel (Corendon-Circus) put in enough time to overnight GC leader Matteo Trentin to retake the green leaders’ jersey. With the two separated by just 6 seconds now, time bonuses might well play a decisive factor in the GC race in the final two stages.

Mark Christian (Team Wiggins Le Col) was the best of the domestically-based riders, finishing 33rd, 44 seconds down on Affini. He is now the best-placed British Conti rider, sitting in 20th overall.

Ethan, meanwhile, finished 62nd, 1 minute 30 seconds in arrears to the stage winner. Not quite the performance he was hoping for, as explains below.

Ethan’s stage 6 diary

I am pretty disappointed, I’m not going to lie. With it being unknown how my legs were going to feel six days into the tour, we sat down and decided that 405 watts was around the power that I was to finish the ride at. My legs felt pretty good warming up so was pretty confident I could do that. I ended up averaging just under 415 watts which I’m really pleased with, six days into the tour. I had nothing left at the end. I think it was a well timed effort, but I’m not so pleased with the time that gave.

I’m still to do a full analysis on the ride but I’m starting to think that a fair amount of time was lost on the corners and positioning. The Yorkshire Worlds are just under two weeks away so I’m going to try and spend quite a bit of time these next couple of weeks altering and nailing that position.

Tomorrow looks to have a tough finishing circuit, so we will be all in for Connor to help him on GC before trying to go one up on yesterday’s result for Matt Walls on the final stage.
