The Chitterne Road Race returned to the calendar on Saturday 12 April, testing riders over 130 demanding kilometres.
From early on, it was Elliott Colyer (TAAP Kalas) who set the tone, launching aan attack that shaped the race. Quickly sensing danger, Finn Dunton (KD Bikes Doltcini Cycling Team) and Charlie Genner (Telcoโm – On Clima – Osรฉs) bridged across, forming an early trio with intent. With just 19 km covered, the three riders established a promising gap of 35 seconds over a chasing peloton already wary of letting strong riders get away too soon.
The challenging nature of the course – with its nearly 1200 metres of elevation across just under seven laps – soon began to reveal cracks within the lead trio. Elliott Colyer found himself unable to sustain the fierce pace, leaving Dunton and Genner to press on together. With five laps remaining, their lead had narrowed slightly to 20 seconds, but rather than panic, the two leaders dug deeper, sensing a crucial moment to solidify their advantage.
By four laps to go, Dunton and Genner’s efforts had paid off, extending their advantage significantly to 45 seconds, and with three laps remaining, the gap ballooned dramatically to a commanding 1 minute 35 seconds.
Behind, the chase saw fresh urgency injected by Jamie Whitcher (BmthCycleworks VitecFire FordCE), who surged clear from the peloton in a spirited attempt to bridge across.
Despite these late challenges, the day belonged unequivocally to Dunton and Genner, who remained composed and unified until the decisive final kilometres. Ultimately, in the battle of tactics and endurance, it was Genner who emerged victorious, adding his name to the prestigious list of Chitterne Road Race winners. Dunton secured a well-deserved second place, while Whitcherโs courageous chase earned him a commendable third.
Junior rider Jack Baldie (trainSharp Roman Race Team) produced a strong performance to finish fourth, with Stephen Swindley (Royal Navy Cycling) rounding out the top five on a day marked by grit, strategy, and standout performances.
