New Under-23 Open National Road Series race boosts 2025 West Midlands calendar

The 2025 West Midlands road racing calendar expands with a new U23 Open National Road Series race

The West Midlands road racing calendar for 2025 receives a significant boost with the addition of a new Under-23 Open National Road Series race. Scheduled for 8th June on the Welland circuit near Malvern, the event provides a welcome expansion to the national under-23 series, which was limited to just four rounds in 2024.

The Welland circuit, known for its rolling terrain and flowing roads, will offer a fair and challenging test for Britain’s up-and-coming riders. William Fotheringham, British Cycling West Midlands board road lead, explained:
“Hosting an under-23 series round is a good fit as the region has produced a stream of talented young riders in recent years. The Welland circuit is a good racing course which will suit all types of riders and it’s easy to reach from most of the UK.”

The inclusion of this new round marks an important step for the Under-23 Open National Road Series, which serves as a vital development pathway for young riders looking to progress to elite and professional levels.

The 2025 West Midlands calendar also sees the return of two prominent National B road races. The Evesham Vale Road Race, on 16th March, will once again open the regional season. As noted in the press release, the event will be expanded to include a new Regional B race for third- and fourth-category riders, alongside the National B race for E/1/2/3 riders, widening opportunities for grassroots competitors.

Equally significant is the return of the Inkberrow round of the British Women’s Team Cup, scheduled for 20th July. This National B race remains a key fixture for women’s road racing, attracting leading domestic teams to one of the region’s most demanding circuits.

Fotheringham praised the collective efforts that have enabled this growth:
“We are really proud that the hard work of our volunteers and officials have enabled us to build again on our achievements of recent years. We have found some fantastic partners, notably Fusion Media, whose support has enabled us to rebuild road racing in the region.”

The 2025 calendar also welcomes new organising clubs, with Bridgnorth CC and Stourbridge CC hosting fresh Regional-level events on 29th March and 22nd June respectively. Longstanding fixtures such as the Marches 3-Day (formerly the BikeStow 3-Day), which runs from 27th-29th June, and the Nick Clayton Memorial Race on 7th September, ensure the calendar maintains both depth and tradition.

The inclusion of the Llandrindod Road Race on 27th April also reflects the growing cross-border collaboration with Welsh Cycling, something Fotheringham highlighted as vital to the region’s success: “Our cross-border collaboration with Welsh Cycling has become a significant factor, and it has enabled us to turn our 3-day into one of the best stage races in the UK.”

The return of established races alongside a new Under-23 Open National Series round underscores the West Midlands’ growing role in British road racing. With opportunities for riders of all categories, the 2025 season promises to balance grassroots participation with national-level competition.
