Stage 3 of the Rás Tailteann offered an exhilarating day of high-speed racing, relentless attacks, and a thrilling solo victory.

The peloton departed Kenmare at breakneck speed, fuelled by support for local rider Cormac Daly of Good Guys Racing. From the outset, the stage was characterised by its aggressive pace and numerous breakaway attempts.

Tom Martin of Wheelbase Cabtech Castelli initiated the first attack after just 2 km, but it was short-lived. Over the next 25 km, the peloton splintered repeatedly as speeds exceeded 50 km/h, with several riders, including Jason Kenny (UCD Cycling Club) and Darnell Moore (All Human-VeloRevolution), attempting and failing to establish a breakaway. George Kimber of Spirit TBW Stuart Hall Cycling also tried his luck but met a similar fate.

Before Glenfesk, a promising quartet formed featuring Lindsay Watson (All Human-VeloRevolution), Wells Willet (Good Guys Racing), Ciaran Maguire (Dan Morrissey Primor by Pissei), and Ben Pease (Moonglu RT), only to be reeled in quickly. As the race approached the first KOH of the day, a Cat 3 climb at Barraduff, Dean Harvey of Team Ireland briefly led but was absorbed by the peloton. Conor McGoldrick (Richardsons Trek DAS) claimed the climb, followed by Logan Maclean (Killarney CC), Jordan Giles (Richardsons Trek DAS), and Liam Flanagan (USA Skyline-Cadence).

The high speed continued into Barraduff, with Marcus Christie (CC Isle of Man), Flanagan, Kimber, and Moore making unsuccessful break attempts. The peloton crossed into County Cork after covering 45 km in just 55 minutes. At 67 km, Paul Kennedy (Skyline-Cadence), Patton Sims (Good Guys Racing NYC), and Watson finally broke free, gaining a 15-second advantage. They were soon joined by Robertson (Ride Revolution) and Flanagan, with Kimber later bridging the gap. However, this lead group was also caught by the halfway point.

A 17-man group made a promising move but was quickly neutralized by the alert peloton, led by yellow jersey Dom Jackson. As the race whizzed through New Twopothouse after 91.5 km, a five-man group including Santos Moreno (Canel’s Java), Kenny, Martin, Byrne (Cycling Leinster), and Perrett (Spirit TBW Stuart Hall Cycling) tried to escape but was reeled in just before the two-hour mark, having covered an astonishing 97.1 km.

The second KOH, a Category 3 climb, saw Ewan Warren Scanlon (Brocar Rali Ale) take the points, followed by Dillon Corkery (Team Ireland), Liam O’Brien (Team Ireland), and McGoldrick. A new break formed but was short-lived, as the peloton remained relentless. As the race neared Mitchelstown with 30 km to go, multiple attacks were launched. A decisive move came with 20 km remaining when a group of ten riders, including McGeough (Canel’s Java), Tomas (Brocar Rali Ale), Max Rushby (Ribble Rebellion), George Peden (Team PB Performance), Daniel McDermott (Ride Revolution) and Ryan Christensen (Foran CT) and others, established a lead.

With 10 km left, the gap was 40 seconds, and McGeough saw his chance. He launched a solo attack with 5 km to go, maintaining a slender lead. Despite intense pressure from the chasing group, McGeough held on to win the stage into Cahir by a few seconds. John Buller (Spellman Dublin Port) finished second, Odhran Doogan (Team Ireland) third, Rushby fourth, and Josep Tomas Juan rounded out the top five. The main peloton finished 15 seconds behind.

Dom Jackson (Foran CT) retained the Bective Stud Yellow Jersey, with no change in the top three in the overall standings. Both Peden and McDermott move into the top five, however, after gaining time after their breakaway escapades.

Dillon Corkery held onto the Citybreak Apartments Green Points Jersey, Conor McGoldrick took the Irish Independent KOH Jersey, and Matteo Cigala kept the Sport Ireland County Rider Jersey. Liam O’Brien retained the Spin 11 U23 Rider Jersey, and stage winner McGeough donned the FBD Stage Winner Jersey. Gareth O’Neill (Challenge CC) won the Festina Daily County Rider Award.
