UCI Continental teams

After the unfortunate mid-season demise of Tim Elverson’s AT85 Pro Cycling team last year, the UK now has just two UCI Continental men’s teams. There haven’t been so few men’s teams at that level in Britain since 2007, when the Plowman Craven – Evans Cycles Racing Team and Recycling.co.uk were the UK’s UCI-level squads.

Saint Piran

It’s all change at Ricci Pascoe’s Cornish Saint Piran outfit in 2024. Longstanding team manager Steve Lampier moves to France to run the Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale Newgen development team, with Julian Winn stepping in as the new Sports Director.

Nine riders leave the team in total. Jack Rootkin Gray and Zeb Kyffin both step up to the pro ranks after superb 2023 seasons, while under-23 national TT champion Josh Charlton, Adam Lewis and Finn Crockett all move sideways to other UCI Continental squads.

In come two ProTeam level riders, Harry Tanfield and Matt Gibson, national circuit race champion Ollie Wood, TRINITY Racing rider Max Walker, domestic breakthrough rider Rowan Baker, Island Games champion Sam Culverwell and promising youngster Dylan Hicks. Harry Birchill, Alex Richardson, Charlie Tanfield and James McKay are amoing the talents that remain with the men in black.

Furthermore, Pascoe has also created a new development team, the Uskis Saint Piran Development Team, which will house a swathe of young domestic talent (see ‘Elite teams’, below).

Expect more domestic race domination, such is the team’s strength, especially if British Cycling allows both Saint Piran UCI squad and its development team to compete in the National Road Series (we understand the British Cycling is currently reviewing its rules about this).

*Max Walker departed Saint Piran on 6 February to join Astana Qazaqstan Development Team.

TRINITY Racing

TRINITY Racing continues with its unique blend of road, mountain bike and off-road specialists in 2024. On the road, the team focuses on the UCI calendar, often eschewing the National Road Series to provide its riders with international race experience.

After a successful 2023 season, four of its riders step up to the WorldTour this year: Lukas Nerurkar, Paul Magnier, Luke Lamperti and Finlay Pickering. Long-term squad members Ollie Rees and Max Walker move on, as does cyclocross specialist Cameron Mason.

2023 stagiares Luke Tuckwell and Ralf Holden join the team on a formal basis, Brit Alex Beldon and Frenchman Ugo Fabries join from the junior ranks, while under-23 national time trial Josh Charlton adds firepower to the squad.

Retained riders include the newly crowned Australian road race champion Fergus Browning, Orlens Grand Prix stage winner Bob Donaldson, and Irish strong man Dean Harvey. Pete Kennaugh and Jon Mould continue as sports directors.

Elite Development Teams

British Cycling’s Elite Development Team status is designed to ‘bridge the gap from club teams to those operating at UCI Continental level’. Only teams which meet a set minimum criterion are selected based on the quality of support which they offer to their riders.

Cycling Sheffield

Dave Coulson’s Sheffield-based development team continues with eight riders. The team’s star rider last year, James McKay, had already sealed a late season move to Saint Piran, while another of the team’s top performers, George Wood, joins the Italian-based Zappi squad.

Three of the class of 2023 continue including James Hartley winner of the Yorkshire Grit Pan Flat Road Race last season. The team’s new signings are an exciting mix. David Hird joins from ROKiT-SRCT (now Thriva-SRCT). He won the Stars of the South West Road Race last year, among other top results. Matthew Warhurst, another former ROKiT-SRCT rider, also impressed 2023; his win at the Oakenclough Road Race was a standout result. Other new signings include James Hartley’s brother Jack, and two riders fresh out of the junior ranks: Alexander Foster and Sam Chaplin.

HUUB BCC RT

New for 2024, the team is a partnership between the successful junior squad, BCC RT (see Junior teams, below) and East Midlands based sponsors Huub and WeBuyCycle. Combining experienced riders such as Adam Kenway with a number of first year under-23 riders graduating from the junior team and beyond, the team aims to create a sustainable pathway for riders to excel across both road and track.

PROJECT1

A new team for 2024, PROJECT1 has put together a young team of promising riders that will race in Europe and across the UK. The six rider squad includes 2023 Junior CiCLE Classic winner Ben Mark, as well as former AG2R Citroën rider Logan Maclean.

Richardsons Trek DAS

Andy Lyons’ Richardsons Trek DAS squad continues in 2024, easy to pick out thanks to its distinctive orange kit. Backed by the Leigh-on-Sea bike shop Richardsons Cycles and furniture brand DAS, the team typically has one of the best-run – and strongest – squads in the domestic peloton.

This season the team plans to complement a calendar of UCI road races with a return to the Rás Tailteann and some UCI racing in Belgium and France. Four eye-catching new signings join the squad, including Cai Davies, winner of the Simon Hook Memorial Road Race and an excellent performer in the National Circuit Series in 2023, and time trial and track specialist Michael Gill.

The team retains key riders Conor McGoldrick and Alex Peters too. Two of Richardsons Trek’s best performers in recent years leave the squad, however, with Jack Crook heading to France and James Jenkins deciding to put his focus more on time trialling than road racing.

Spirit TBW Stuart Hall Cycling

Russell Rowles was uncertain over the winter whether he would continue his long-running Spirit team in 2024. Continue it does, however, with Josh Parkin once again taking up the team manager mantle. The team will begin with season with compact squad of just five riders, all re-signings from 2023. We understand that the team is working to secure more signings as the season progresses. The team plans to combine National Road Series racing with trips to Ireland and mainland Europe.

Team PB Performance

Run by Paul and Louise Bennett, Team PB Performance was created as an opportunity to promote their coaching business and create a vehicle to support rider development. They are determined to do things in ‘the right way for their riders’. “We focused on supporting the riders as individuals, getting to know them and ensuring the fundamentals were taken care of,” Louise told us back in 2020.

The outfit has two squads. An Elite Development Team (EDT) squad, which focuses primarily on national racing, and a ‘pathway to EDT’ squad which has a focus more on regional racing, providing a progression pathway for riders.

The team is keen to actively support the racing scene, putting on a round of the Under-23 Open National Road Series each year. This season’s PB Performance Espoirs Road Race is on 21 April.

Thriva SRCT

The Scott Reading Cycling Team, known as ROKiT-SRCT in 2023, were close to collapse last season when we spoke to team manager Adam Ellis, despite being one of the most successful domestic team of the season. Thankfully, the team’s fortunes have turned around since, with a new title sponsor coming on board, Thriva. The team now plans to combine a calendar of road and gravel racing with a slightly slimmer, but nonetheless talented, squad.

With the team facing an uncertain future for a time, it is perhaps unsurprising that three of the team’s outstanding performers in 2023, David Hird, Matt Warhurst and Jenson Young move on to pastures new. But PB Performance Espoirs Road Race winner Will Truelove is retained, as is Galway Classic winner Joe Beckingsale. The squad is also bolstered by the arrival of talented young Welshman Ben Bright, who achieved a number of National B top tens last season in just his first year as an under-23.

USKIS Saint Piran

New to the domestic peloton in 2024 is the USKIS Saint Piran development team. The team’s press release described the squad as an ‘Under-23 Elite Team’ that “has been established to provide riders who may not be ready to step up into the UCI Continental level to learn their sport, facing higher-level competitors and honing their racecraft participating in elite races in the UK and Europe.”

Former GB Senior Academy rider Rhys Britton, stepping down from the Saint Piran UCI Continental squad, will be the road captain, with 2023 junior national road race champion Finn Mason, and promising British talents Huw Buck Jones and Dylan Westley all part of a multinational squad.

We understand that British Cycling is currently reviewing its rules about whether Saint Piran’s Uskis team and its UCI Continental will be able to compete in the same races this season.

Wheelbase CabTech Castelli

Stalwarts of the domestic peloton, the Wheelbase CabTech Castelli team were a revelation in 2023, enjoying their most successful season after almost two decades at the elite end of domestic cycling.

The team continues with much of its successful squad from last year. Matt Fox, the Ilkey Grand Prix winner last year, is the squad’s biggest departure, moving to France with CC Étupes. Scottish road race champion Tim Shoreman stays however, as does talented young climber Jacob Smith. Former national junior cyclocross champion Joseph Smith is a canny new signing.

Other elite teams

Foran CT

Foran Cycling Team (previously Foran CCC) was set up in 2019 by Tom Quaid and Paul Lavelle (Directors of Foran Construction) and has very much been a rider run team since its inception. In essence the team is a group of working professionals who strive to race at the highest level alongside careers, whether that is National Road Series events or overseas stage races.

The team plans to return to the Rás Mumhan and the Rás Tailteann in Ireland this season, and will also be present in local races such as the Portsdown Classic and RCR Fat Creations road race at Goodwood, alongside key national events.

Halesowen Academy

Going into its tenth year in 2024 Halesowen Academy has put together arguably its strongest line-up yet, increasing rider numbers to 17 with a 6-rider junior squad and a five-man under-23 team thanks to the support from local companies including Mapei UK.

The Academy had an excellent 2023, spearheaded by Joe Brookes, whose breakthrough rides earned him a move to France. New signings for 2024 include first-year juniors Ryan Oldfield and Hudson Hendry. Oldfield, a regular at the Halesowen track since his formative years, had a stellar season last year, including medals at the national track championships, while Hendry took silver in the national pursuit championship. Wales Academy rider Ryu Roberts-Hayamizu also joins the junior squad.

The team had an expanded race programme in 2023, which including with the Rás Mumhan, Rás Tailteann and Rutland-Melton CiCLE Classic. A similar programme is on the cards for 2024.

A trio of the team’s riders heads to TAAP Kalas, Cai Davies, who excelled in the National Circuit Series last year, joins Richardsons Trek DAS, while Olveston GP Road Race winner Marinus Peterson heads to France.

Moonglu RT

Established in 2022, Moonglu RT was initially formed to assist younger Moonglu Cycling Club members who had already started to race. Last season the small Yorkshire-based team punched above its weight, with Daniel McDermott and Ben Pease in particular regularly featuring at the pointy end of national road races. The team retains Pease but loses McDermott for 2024, with Jonny Britton the squad’s one addition.

There are three elements to the team: a more relaxed regional team, an elite/u23 development team and a women’s gravel team.

The riders listed below are for the elite squad only, which is aiming for National Road and Circuit Series races in 2024, together with some international races.

Run by Jason Gault and sponsored by Primera Sport bike shop and the TeamJobs recruitment agency, the Poole-based team will operate two squads in 2024. An elite squad – made of up new signings William Abbott, Guido Blee, Thomas Doig, Matthew Gilmour and Vaughn Pretorius, as well as existing riders Luke Barfoot, Ashley Newman, Ben Miller – will target a blend of National A and National B races, while other riders on the team will form a development squad focused on the lower road racing tiers.

Reflex Racing

Reflex Racing supports aspiring riders in regional and national races, with teams based in the south west of England as well as France. The team is targeting races in the Under-23 National Road Series in particular, looking to build on Leo White’s podium at the Stars of the South West road race. White himself is moving to the Spanish Fundacion Ciclismo Benicadell squad, but new recruits such as Archie Peet and Sam Nisbet bolster the squad’s National B road racing experience.

RIBBLE REBELLION

RIBBLE REBELLION is an all-new racing team founded by Ribble Cycles which says its focus is “disrupting the global crit circuit”. Quite what that means in practice – apart from using all caps for the team name – remains to be seen, but what we do know is that the team contains nine riders and will have a big focus on the US crit scene.

Former national circuit race champion Matt Bostock and UCI road race winner Jim Brown are the marquée signings. Both riders have fast finishes and are talented enough to fit right in to a UCI Continental or ProTeam. Alongside Bostock and Brown are former GB Academy rider Max Rushby, team captain Joe Laverick and crit and cyclocross specialist Tom Couzens. They are joined by former Pro Team Belgian rider Ruben Aspers and three North Americans: Al Morison, former Hagens Berman Axeon  rider Cole Davis and Cam Fitzmaurice.

The race programme is crit-heavy and will see the team spending a large proportion of its race days – and air miles – racing Stateside, beginning in April with the Redlands amateur stage race and the Speedweek crit series. There will also be opportunities to see them in the UK too, with appearances at the Rutland-Melton CiCLE Classic, the Lincoln Grand Prix and the National Circuit Series planned.

Schils – Doltcini RT

The Schils – Doltcini Racing Team from Marks Tey in Colchester had its most successful year to date last season. With an extensive international calendar, the team won the overall classifications at both the Tour of Albania (UCI 2.2) and the Tour of Mauritius (UCI 2.2), along with multiple stage victories. Racing across Europe, Asia, South America and the Caribbean, the team also managed to wear the yellow and green jerseys in Tour de Guyane and achieved multiple top tens in Tour de Martinique and events in China. The squad has been expanded for 2024 as the team seeks to progress further, with another wide-ranging programme on the cards.

Sn Vitae Huub p/b Bim Bam Coaching

Established last year by Charlie Lacaille, the Sn Vitae outfit quickly turned heads for its striking kit and appearances in UCI road races featuring notable guest riders like Joe Laverick and Ewan Mackie.

This season the team welcomes on board a new sponsor in HUUB. With an increased budget, the team is planning an expanded race calendar, with invites to races in Rhodes already confirmed for February, and UCI races in Belgium, Lithuania and Norway also on the cards. The National Road Series is also a target for the squad.

Four new riders join in 2024, including former Eiser Hirumet rider Max Williamson and talented young Devonian Felix Whetter.

TAAP Kalas has three new signings in 2024, with Ollie Hucks, Harvey Lawson and Cameron McLaren all moving over from the now-folded Kalas Motip outfit. Of the fifteen full time riders the team has had since 2019 three are now WorldTour professionals and eight remain on development pathways likely to lead them to stepping up to the pro ranks.

2023 saw the team take 5 victories and many podium finishes across varying terrain. Expect more outstanding performances at home and abroad from the Yorkshire-based team.

With new title sponsors Huub on board for 2024, Beeston Cycling Club’s Junior Race Team propelled themselves to the forefront of junior teams in the UK in 2023, with Ben Marsh sealing overall victory in the National Junior Series.

Despite the Junior CiCLE Classic winner moving on, the team is formed of a number of talented second year juniors, with Lewis Tinsley, who signs from the feeder team Beeston Cycling Club, already impressing in the National Circuit Series last year. The team is set to race in both the UK and Europe, developing riders for their new senior team and beyond.
