Lucy Lee (DAS-Handsling) triumphed at the Women’s Tri-Regional Road Race Championships, pipping Ruth Shier (Hutchinson-Brother UK) at the finish line, and becoming South East Regional Road Race champion in the process.
The Tri-Regional Road Race Championships, hosted by GS Mossa, took place on the same tough Handcross circuit that had seen Dan Gardner victorious at the Giles Ree Memorial earlier that day. Up for grabs were divisional honours for three separate regions: South-East, East and Central.
A fast, aggressive race played out, with 25 riders setting out from Staplefield village green, West Sussex, in the searing 28C heat.
The race was on straight from the flag drop, with the riders covering the 14.7km circuit at an average of 35kph to begin with. The racing may have been intense but the bunch remained intact for the initial laps. The heat, however, began to take its toll, with a number of riders struggling in the sweltering conditions.
After three laps of racing, a strong break of five riders went clear of the bunch. They were Lucy Lee (DAS-Handsling), Ruth Shier (Hutchinson-Brother UK), Millie Couzens (Fenix‐Deceuninck), Lizi Brooke (Wahoo-Le Col) and Savannah Morgan (Unattached). They quickly established a two-minute gap on the chasing peloton.
With a lap and a half to go, Lee and Shier attacked from the front of the race to form a 30-second gap on the trio behind. They combined to hold that gap to the line. As they approached the finish line, Lee pipped Shier by a bike length to take the win.
