Zoe Langham and Alex Richardson continue as leaders of The British Continental road race rankings after the Owen Blower Memorial road race, as the tight tussle in the women's rankings continues

With the cancellation of The Drummond Trophy mid-race, there was just a solitary National B road race, the Owen Blower Memorial. Here is our round-up of what it all means for the tight tussle at the top of The British Continental women’s road race rankings.

The full rankings are in our ever-evolving stats hub here.

Men’s national road race rankings

The curtailment of The Drummond Trophy meant that there were no men’s National B road races last weekend, and therefore no change to the rankings.

This weekend could see a lot of movement though, with regional road race championships happening up and down the country. There are six in all for the men:

  • Swindon Wheelers Centenary Road Race (incorporating the South & South West Senior Mens Regional RR Championships) – startlist here
  • Giles Ree Memorial Race (incorporating the South East Men’s Regional RR Championships) – startlist here
  • Welsh Mens Road Race Championships – startlist here
  • North West & Yorkshire Men’s Regional RR Championships- startlist here
  • East Midland Men’s Regional RR Championships promoted by The YBC & UONCC – startlist here
  • North East Regional RR Championships.

Women’s national road race rankings

With the Owen Blower Memorial containing five of the top ten in the women’s road race rankings –  Zoe Langham (1st), Tamsin Miller (2nd), Bexy Dew (4th), Lucy Lee (7th) and and Robyn Clay (9th) – together with strong line-ups from the three leading squads in the team rankings – Hutchinson-Brother UK, Pro-Noctis – Heidi Kjeldsen – 200 Degrees Coffee, and DAS – Handsling Bikes – the race was was an important battleground for rankings points.

Lee’s (DAS-Handsling) win at the Owen Blower Memorial made her the highest points scorer of the weekend, moving her up from 7th to 3rd. Lee is now just 20 points behind second-placed Miller (Hutchinson-Brother UK), who was sixth in the race. Rankings leader Langham (Pro-Noctis – Heidi Kjeldsen – 200 Degrees Coffee) finished one place higher than Miller, meaning she extended her lead at the top by a modest four points.

Clay (Pro-Noctis – Heidi Kjeldsen – 200 Degrees Coffee) climbs one place to 8th thanks to her 7th at the Owen Blower, while Francesca Hall (Loughborough Lightning) is into the top ten for the first time this season after coming third at the race.

It remains exceedingly tight in the team rankings, with the ‘big three’ all scoring well. Hutchinson-Brother UK still lead, but they have had their lead over Pro-Noctis – Heidi Kjeldsen – 200 Degrees Coffee trimmed from 29 points to just 17. In turn, Pro-Noctis – Heidi Kjeldsen – 200 Degrees Coffee now only have a 52 point advantage over third-placed DAS-Handsling, down from 61 points.

This nail-biting battle should continue this weekend as it plays out across three women’s regional road race championship races:

  • East Midland Women’s Regional RR Championships incorporating the West Midlands Women’s Regional RR Championships promoted by The YBC & UONCC – startlist here
  • East/North West/Yorkshire Combined Women’s Regional RR Championships
  • Women’s Tri-Regional Road Race Championship – South-East, East, Central – startlist here.

How it works

The rankings take results from National A and National B road races in the UK in 2023. Note the emphasis on road racing; results from circuit races and criteriums don’t count. And neither do points from Regional or UCI road races. The focus is deliberately narrow; we want to understand who has been performing in national-level road races in the UK across the season. And keeping it focused makes it easier for us to manage and update here at British Conti HQ.

Like any rankings system, this isn’t perfect. We aren’t pretending it will be a completely objective measure of road racing performance or ability. But we do hope it injects a bit of fun and helps create a bit of interest in national-level road racing this season, particularly at National B level.

The scoring system is very similar to the one used by British Cycling, with riders in the top 20 of races qualifying for points, with points also being awarded to stage winners.
