Emily Proud (Le Col) took the win from a small break at the 2023 Banbury Star Cyclists’ Club road race, the second round of the British Women’s Team Cup.
The Banbury Star Cyclists’ Club road race took place in mild, dry conditions, with riders taking on three laps of the testing Horley C114 circuit, including an ascent of the leg-sapping Edge Hill on each tour.
By lap 2 a lead group of around 30 riders had broken clear, featuring good representation from the Hutchinson-Brother UK, LDN-Academy, Le Col RT and Wahoo-Le Col teams, as well as the Pro-Noctis – Heidi Kjeldsen – 200 Degrees Coffee pairing of Bexy Dew and Zoe Langham (the national road race rankings leader), among others.

The ascent of Edge Hill served to split the lead group up, and as the race entered lap 3, 11 riders had moved clear. They included Dew and Langham, Emily Proud (Le Col RT), the Hutchinson-Brother UK pair of Tammy Miller and Ruth Shier, Lucy Lee (DAS-Handsling), Katy Hill (LDN-Academy), Abi Plowman (Jadan Vive le Velo Glasdon), Frances Owen and Lizi Brooke (both Wahoo-Le Col), and Maddie Heywood (FTP-Fulfil The Potential Racing).
Both Plowman and Heywood were dropped on the final lap, with the other nine staying clear together until the line.
Proud sprinted to the win ahead of Lee, with Langham rounding out the podium in third. Victory for Proud follows her podium at the Dave Peck Memorial, marking her out as one to watch as the season continues.
Behind, Miller and Dave Peck Memorial winner Ruth Shier finished 4th and 5th, ensuring a good points haul for the Hutchinson-Brother UK team.
The results meant the Hutchinson-Brother UK extends its lead at the top of the standings, a handsome 212 points clear of nearest rivals Le Col RT. Wahoo-Le Col is third, a further 141 points behind.
