Edward Morgan (MUC-OFF-SRCT-STORCK) emerged victorious in an attritional PNE National B road race, which also doubled as the South and South West Senior Open Regional Road Race Championships.
The race unfolded over 10.5 laps of a 12.9km circuit around Owslebury, Hampshire, totalling approximately 130km. The course featured rolling terrain with a decisive climb near the finish line, which played a crucial role in the race’s outcome.
The early stages of the race saw numerous attempts to establish a decisive break, but it wasn’t until around 30 miles in that Josh Housley (Primera-TeamJobs) and Danylo Riwnyj (Foran CT) launched a promising move.
One of the pre-race favourites, Jacob Vaughan (VC Londres), suffered misfortune with an early puncture that ended his race prematurely, while Tom Heal (Raptor Factory Racing) had an unfortunate crash and was taken to hospital for treatment.
Jordan Giles (DAS Richardsons) launched a move to bridge across, which was later followed by Thomas Gardner (University of Exeter CC), Cameron Still (Ride Revolution Coaching), and eventual winner Morgan. These four chasers eventually made the juncture, forming the winning break of six alongside Giles.
With a strong gap established, the front group collaborated effectively until the final lap. Early on, Morgan, Housley and Gardner moved clear, before Riwnyj also made contact to make it four out front.
Morgan launched a decisive move on the final climb, with Housley responding. Gardner struggled with severe cramp at a crucial moment, losing contact along with Riwnyj. Morgan’s strength shone through as he powered away from Housley in the finale to secure the win, MUC-OFF-SRCT-STORCK’s sixth road race victory of the season. Riwnyj rounded out the podium.
Gardner fought valiantly to take fourth despite his difficulties, earning him the South Regional title, while Stephen Swindley (Royal Navy Cycling) clinched the South West title.
