Sasha Dyke headed an LDN Academy one-two, while FTP (Fulfil the Potential) Racing won the British Team Cup at the final round at the Will Houghton Memorial, Sunday 1 September
LDN Academy took a dominant one-two in the final round of the British Team Cup as Sasha Dyke led Katy Hill across the line in the Will Houghton Memorial Circuit Race.
Around the Hillingdon cycle circuit, the action proved to be as hot as the sunshine and blue skies that greeted Round 7 of the British Team Cup and with a title to be decided, there was no rest in the peloton.
From the start, Cup leaders FTP (Fulfil the Potential) Racing, Jadan Vive Le Velo Glasdon and LDN Academy were all trying to force breaks in the bunch – and generally cause chaos in the peloton – but with this being a roughly 90-minute race, no one was able to make a gap of any significance.
On lap 18, Loughborough Lightning’s Alice Lethbridge formed the largest break of the race consisting of six riders: Louise Moriarty (private member), Elektra Georgiakakis (FTP (Fulfil The Potential) Racing, Sasha Dyke (LDN Academy Orange Race Team), Lydia Watts (The Phoenix Collective) and Lauren O’Brien (Stolen Goat Race Team). Despite that decent group up the road, the break lasted just two laps before it was reeled back in.
With 45 minutes to go, and the bunch was starting to tire and string out, Hill made her crucial move as she attacked off the front, aided by a tailwind providing an extra pusgh. With no one willing to follow, Dyke took it upon herself to accelerate and bridge the gap – linking up with her teammate and forming a productive duo at the front.
Taking it in turns to put their heads into the wind, the pair were building up a monster of an advantage, which grew to 68 seconds with 20 minutes remaining and only grew further as their LDN teammates disrupted the chase.
The pair caught the bunch with three laps to go, but elected to drop back rather than overtake so cruised to the finish with no threats to their comprehensive one-two lock-out. Dyke ultimately took the flag with a tyre’s width of a margin over Hill.
Third went to FTP’s Katherine Sheridan as she attacked with two laps to go and took the final place on the podium with a 10-second margin. Saint Piran WRT’s Katie-Anne Calton won the bunch sprint for fourth by half-a-bike length over Caitlin Bower (Wolfox CAMS Le Col RT).
FTP stormed away with the British Team Cup win, as Sheridan’s third was enough to bank the points needed to see off a spirit charge from Loughborough Lightning, which had two riders in the top 10 in the shape of Georgina Oakley and Penny Colloff. In the end, a margin of 73 points was enough to ensure the erstwhile series leaders walked away with the crown.
Third went to LDN Academy’s Orange team, with Brother UK – On Form not too far behind in fourth.
