Round One of the Proper Northern Road Race Series took place on Easter Sunday in the Lancashire spring sunshine with the Capernwray road race.
After Rowan Baker’s win down south on Saturday, Tyler Hannay continued Saint Piran’s weekend of dominance, emerging as the victor in a 15-rider uphill sprint in the open race.
In the women’s race, Robyn Clay led home a DAS-Hutchinson-Brother UK 1-2-3 in a similar show of strength from the UCI Continental team.
The open race stayed relatively compact. After eight attritional laps of the lumpy 12.7km circuit northeast of Lancaster. The peloton was gradually whittled down on each lap, leaving around fifteen riders to hit the final ascent of Sunny Bank together.
Saint Piran’s Tyler Hannay emerged strongest, beating his USKIS Saint Piran stablemate Dylan Westley to the line. Jacob Smith (Wheelbase CabTech Castelli), second in this race last year, reached the podium once again with third.
“Because it was only 100km, it was always going to be flat out,” Hannay told The British Continental afterward. “The race was on a high level with a good field so no one could breakaway, although there were plenty of attacks.
“Ed Morgan attacked with 4km to go and I went initially but then I waited, as I backed myself on the final climb, I kicked with 200 to go and Dylan Westley initially came round me but I didn’t give up and went back around him to take the win.”
Women’s race
In the afternoon, the women’s race was won by a dominant performance from Robyn Clay of DAS-Hutchinson-Brother UK. The 20-year-old broke clear of the peloton mid-race, building up nearly two minutes of advantage to take a convincing win.
Her teammate Morven Yeoman sprung clear to cross the line alone for second, while another DAS-Hutchinson-Brother UK rider Tammy Miller won a group sprint for a podium lockout. Lucy Lee completed a dominant display for the team with fifth.
“One Shibden rider snuck off the front and my team mate Tammy sat on the front for a while just holding her at a certain distance,” Clay recounted to The British Continental. “I was fourth wheel and hoping there’d be a lull so I could attack and bridge. Eventually Tammy swung right, the girl in second wheel stayed left and slowed and so I attacked through the middle of them with about 2 and a third to go.
“I caught the Shibden rider just before the foot of the climb and sat on for a couple hundred meters then went to the front to keep the pace up. I checked back to see if the other girl was okay but I’d dropped her so just carried on pushing. I hadn’t planned on being out there alone but I had nothing to lose so just went full gas.”
