What is it?
Organised by Glenmarnock Wheelers, the Drummond Trophy is one of Scotland’s major annual road races, and has been running for well over 50 years. The race forms round 3 of the Scottish Alba Road Series.
The race has a fabled list of past winners. We couldn’t find a definitive list of victors over the years, but our search of past race results did reveal that the late, great Richard Moore won the race in 1999. Pete Williams won twice, in 2009 and 2012, Dave Clark was the 2014 winner, Steve Lampier triumphed in 2017, while Aussie Michael Storer, a WorldTour pro, won the race in 2018. Tim Shoreman (Wheelbase CabTech Castelli) was the 2022 champion.
Route
The race takes in seven laps of the Drumclog Circuit. The circuit starts and finishes by Strathaven (pronounced Stray-vin) in South Lanarkshire and takes in a loop to the southwest of the town.
With 212m of elevation over 20.7km, the circuit is a typically rolling affair, the sharpest section of climbing appearing 11km into the circuit with the Dungavel climb, which reaches double digit gradients in places.
Timings
The race begins at 10.00, rolling out from Strathaven Scout Hut.
Contenders
Finn Crockett (The Cycling Academy) is the standout name. Last year’s Rutland-Melton International CiCLE Classic winner, and a recent Ràs stage victor, will be a marked man.
Last year’s victor Tim Shoreman (Wheelbase CabTech Castelli) has a fast finish and appears to be in good form, bagging three National B podiums already this season. Teammate Jacob Smith impressed in the early season with a stage win at the Peaks 2 Day and second in the Capernwray road race.
Moonglu RT has been a surprise packet in recent races. Ben Peasewas excellent last weekend, finishing 10th in the Blaydon CC road race and 2nd in the GA Bennett, while Daniel McDermottwas on the podium at the Totnes Vire stage race last month.
Alba Series leader Craig Paterson (Spokes Racing) lines up. The Straiton Struggle winner was 4th at the Hugh Dornan Memorial and will be motivated to continue his run of results in the Series.
Finally, Jack Rees (HUUB Wattshop) leads a Ribble Weldtite Pro Cycling old boys reunion, lining up with old teammates Thomas Timothy and Richard Jones. Can the trio revive their road racing legs and take the win?
