2022 calendar: British UCI road races revealed

The UCI road races expected to take place on British shores in 2022

The UCI has published its 2022 international road season calendar. The calendar includes just four British UCI road races, down from the six originally planned in the 2021 calendar and the eight planned in 2020

What’s changed? The loss of the Tour de Yorkshire and the Tour de Yorkshire Women’s Race are the two races missing from the original calendar, although of course, neither went ahead this year because of Covid. Organisers had hoped to find the funds for the race to continue in 2022, but ultimately concluded that “the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, combined with escalating financial challenges and uncertainties” meant the race was unviable in 2022. Whether it ever returns is uncertain.

The good news is that not only does the RideLondon Classique look set to return after a two-year absence, but it will also now be a three-day stage race rather than a one-off event. It has a new date at the end of May, which neatly places it a week ahead of the Women’s Tour.

There had been hints when Erick Rowsell was elite road manager at British Cycling that the governing body was hoping to support some National Road Series to run as .2 UCI road races, but it looks as though that won’t happen for the time being.
